Finding the Assets that You are Building

This guide is designed to help schools, congregations, youth serving organizations, businesses and anyone else providing activities, clubs or programs for youth to identify which of the 40 Developmental Assets you are helping to build through your programs and activities. Search Institute® has identified the following building blocks of healthy development—known as Developmental Assets®—that help children grow up healthy, caring, and responsible.  You have been building assets in youth the whole time you have been running programs and activities and its time to recognize all that you have been doing and put a name and purpose to it!  This guide will help you do just that.  There are 2 ways to use this guide.  You can either go through the checklists (pages 2-7) with a particular program in mind or check off which assets you are building or you can go through each of the assets and list what you are doing in your organization to build that particular asset (pages 8-14). So look through the following checklists and see how many assets you are building in your community’s youth.  You will find information on building assets in young children, middle aged children and adolescents. Once you discover how many assets you are building make sure you give yourself recognition for your asset building efforts as you are contributing to the healthy development of youth!
