The Genesee Valley Healthy Partnership envisions a healthier community (Livingston County and the greater Genesee Valley) resulting from a collaborative, thorough and extensive community health assessment with broad participation from GVHP members and the community at large from which the most pressing strategic issues are identified. From the strategic issues, goals and strategies emerge, leading to an action plan organized by committee. Through the collaborative committee structure, GVHP's healthy community issues can receive special concentration, including innovative methods.
The GVHP utilized a participatory planning process developed rough a cooperative agreement between the National Association of City and County Health Officials and the Center for Disease Control. MAPP, Mobilizing for Action through Planning and Partnerships is a community involvement and engagement process of a broad cross-section of the community. The GVHP believes that using the principles of MAPP are essential for a successful planning process. In September 2001 a MAPP Steering Committee was formed who coordinated the MAPP planning process following the 5 stages: organizing for action, visioning, community assessments, identifying key strategic issues and mobilizing for action.
A MAPP summit was held in October 2002 where over 75 individuals from the community came together to receive the results of 5 Assessments.
- Local Public Health System Assessment
- community Health Status Assessment
- Forces of Change Assessment
- Community Themes & Strengths Assessment
- Uninsured/ Underinsured Study
From the findings of these studies the participants identified key strategic issues that were to be prioritized and deployed to the committees of the GVHP. As a result of the prioritization of issues a re-organization of the GVHP committee structure occurred in April 2003. This consolidated 11 Committees into five. Committee Chairpersons were appointed and each Committee began further prioritization of the strategic issues and the formation of goals and strategies to address those priorities. All of these planning efforts are driven by the principles of collaboration and full participation of the diverse membership of the Committees and the multiple workgroups/subcommittees of the GVHP.
