Train Like an Olympian
http://www.newswise.com/articles/view/543103/
Newswise — The 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics conjure up images of fantastically fit athletes from all over the world going for the gold. Although the United States is a sports-crazed nation, increasing obesity rates indicate that most Americans would rather be spectators than participants.

Colleen Greene, wellness coordinator with MFit, the University of Michigan Health System’s health promotion division, says there are many ways you can get off the couch and get moving without hurting yourself — even during commercial breaks. If the Olympic frenzy has inspired you to start a new fitness routine, Greene offers these tips-for more check out the link!

LITTLE BITES!
Watch Global, Eat Local!
Yes, a little late, but a good message anyway! And there is nothing better than fresh!
http://www.empirestatenews.net/News/20080805-3.html
Commissioner challenges New Yorkers to “eat local”

ALBANY - New York State Agriculture Commissioner Patrick Hooker Monday challenged all New Yorkers to "eat local" for at least one day this week. During the week of August 3-9, National Farmers' Market Week and the peak of fresh summer produce, New Yorkers are challenged to only eat foods that are produced or grown here in New York.

"Here's the challenge," the Commissioner said. "Pick a day this week and try to eat only locally grown or made products for breakfast, lunch, dinner and any snacks in between. This simple task has tremendous benefits for everyone in New York. Buying and eating local foods supports our hard working farmers, keeps farmland open and productive, reduces food miles which saves on gas and can cut greenhouse gas emissions, and last but not least, it tastes great as it is picked at the peak of harvest and offers not only excellent flavor, but maximum nutrition."

From FITNET
On this day in 1877, Thomas Edison wrote the president of the Telegraph
Company in Pittsburgh, PA. The letter stated that the word "hello" would
be a more appropriate greeting than "ahoy," when answering the
telephone, as suggested by Alexander Graham Bell. So that makes today
the birth of a habit. As habits go, it's a rather benign one, but a
habit nonetheless; how about calling up a friend and seeing whether they
want to engage in some physical activity with you this weekend? That
would be a great habit!

Speaking of great habits, during this Olympics why not make each day a
gold medal day of better health. Let this 2008 Olympic event be your
inspiration to become fit for life:
1) Eat a healthy breakfast
2) Get 8 hours of sleep
3) Consume 8 glasses of healthy fluids
4) Be physically active for at least 38 minutes each day
5) Eat 8 servings of healthy food
6) Brush your teeth after all meals
7) Avoid tobacco including second hand smoke.
8) Avoid any distractions like cell phones while driving.

More-5 Lifestyle Habits To Cut Stroke Risk
http://www.webmd.com/stroke/news/20080812/5-lifestyle-habits-cut-stroke-risk
The researchers defined a low-risk lifestyle as:
Not currently smoking.
Keeping your weight right. That means a body mass index of less than 25. A BMI of 25-29.9 is considered overweight and a BMI of 30 or higher is considered obese.
Moderate to vigorous activity for a half-hour or more every day.
A top diet score, which included components such as a diet low in "bad" fats and rich in vegetables and fruits, lean protein like chicken and fish, fiber, nuts, and legumes.
Moderate alcohol intake. For women that's up to about one drink a day; for men it's up to two drinks a day.
Women who said they adhered to all five healthy lifestyle habits had a 79% lower risk of total stroke and 81% lower risk of ischemic stroke than those women who followed none of the healthy habits. Ischemic stroke is the most common type of stroke; it occurs when an artery in the brain becomes blocked.

Men who reported they lived with all five lifestyle factors had a 69% lower risk of total stroke and 80% lower risk of ischemic stroke, compared to those men who said they did not follow any of the five lifestyle factors.

Activity Calorie Burn Rate
http://health.discovery.com/tools/calculators/activity/activity.html
Spending time at the gym isn't the only way to get your body moving, nor is running for hours on a treadmill the only way to burn calories. This calculator estimates the number of calories you'll burn performing a range of activities at varying intensity levels, over a certain period of time or particular distance, taking into consideration your height and weight. The key to a successful exercise program — and the health benefits it can provide — is finding an activity you enjoy and making it a regular part of your lifestyle.

http://www.smallstep.gov/take_small_steps_today.html
(# 59) Choose activities you enjoy & you'll be more likely to stick with them.
(# 60) Stretch before bed to give you more energy when you wake.
(# 3) Do sit-ups in front of the TV.
(# 170) You can break up your physical activity into 10-15 minute sessions throughout the day—it’s the daily total that matters. Aim for at least 30 minutes for adults, 60 minutes for children.
(# 98) Walk to a co-worker's desk instead of emailing or calling them.

Latest Report on Obesity In America:
http://www.bizjournals.com/sanfrancisco/stories/2008/08/18/daily21.html?jst=b_ln_hl
I referenced an article from California as it looked at causes and thought that it was more helpful in that way.

Some policy recommendations included:
Investing in effective community-based disease-prevention programs that promote increased physical activity and good nutrition;
Increasing access to safe, accessible places for physical activity in communities. Examples include creating and maintaining parks, sidewalks and bike lanes and providing incentives for smart growth designs that make communities more livable and walkable;
Improving access to affordable nutritious foods by providing incentives for grocery stores and farmers' markets to locate in underserved communities;
Encouraging employers to provide workplace wellness programs;
Providing people with the information they need about nutrition and activity to make educated decisions, including point-of-purchase information about the nutrition and calorie content of foods.

New York was named the 37th most obese state in America. The state's adult obesity rate is 23.5 percent, an increase from last year. For childhood obesity: New York: Rank, 18 -- 15.3% of children obese-for more information on HIP HOP for health for Livingston County kids, please e-mail me!

SO Simple-Walking
Another article I may have referenced before, but walking is just so good, I had to bring it back!
http://health.discovery.com/centers/nutritionfitness/fitness/articles/experts/chek/walking.html

Just a sample-walking and metabolism-food for thought!

Walking is one of the most primal movement patterns known to man. Because walking was essential to our survival during our developmental years, our bodies have developed so that walking and movement are essential to health; as it has been said, form follows function.
Walking requires the integrated use of our arms, legs and torso. Hundreds of calorie-burning muscles are utilized simply by walking. Walking briskly on a daily basis not only results in calorie burning, it increases enzyme and metabolic activity that may result in increased calorie consumption for up to 12 hours after walking as little as 2 miles. The more deconditioned you are, the greater the metabolic effect of walking.

Activity Burn Calculator
http://health.discovery.com/tools/calculators/activity/activity.html
I am pretty sure I've sent this before, but love it because the first activity where you can figure out how many calories you burned is accordion playing!

You can't be afraid to make errors! You can't be afraid to be naked before the crowd, because no one can ever master the game of baseball, or conquer it. You can only challenge it.
